Rising Sea Levels and Land Rights

Another major issue for the Boracay Foundation is a law that says that no structures can exist less than 50 meters from high tide.

"But with climate change," Virgie said, "high tide is moving closer and closer."

Imagine that your family has owned a plot of land from "time immemorial" and the business you put on that land is your only source of income. Now imagine that the front of your plot falls within the new buffer zone. The land behind your building has already been developed.

You risk losing your property in part or in whole, based on rising sea levels which are out of your control.
